Lusaka Business and Technical College (LBTC), originally established in 1956 as Hodgson College, has a rich history of providing quality education in Zambia. In response to the need for industry-specific training, the institution was later renamed Lusaka Trades Training Institute.
In August 1994, the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Vocational Training (MSTVT) appointed a National Task Force to review government policy on Technical Education and Vocational Training (TEVT). This review was driven by significant changes in Zambia’s economy and demographic patterns. The final report, submitted in January 1995, prompted the Government to enact the TEVET Act No. 13 of 1998. The Act aimed to create a responsive system of Technical Education and Vocational Training that meets the evolving needs of the formal and informal sectors, the labor market, and socio-economic conditions. One key reform under the Act allowed TEVET institutions, including LBTC, to operate autonomously under a Management Board System and adopt business-oriented operational models. As demand for business-related programs increased, the College expanded its curriculum to include both Business and Technical courses, leading to its current identity as Lusaka Business and Technical College.s
